Not Ashamed of the Gospel of Christ

“I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.” – Luke 12:8 (NIV)

There are two sectors in which people operate: private and public. There are various reasons why a person does certain things in private. One of those reasons is shame—the feeling of humiliation due to wrong behavior. But there is no shame in knowing Christ. Acknowledging faith in God among peers will gain you the favor of heaven and the acknowledgment of its hosts.

Alternate translations

*note that the ESV translation is nearly identical.

“Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:” (KJV)

“And I say to you that everyone who will confess me before the children of men, The Son of Man will also confess him before the Angels of God.” (Aramaic Bible in plain English)

“But I tell you, the Son of Man will acknowledge before God’s angels everyone who acknowledges me before people.” (ISV)

Meaning of the verse

These words from Jesus mean that one day – sometime, somewhere – We will be forced to either proclaim our dedication to Jesus Christ or deny it. And when that time comes, Jesus is telling us here that our salvation depends on it. (See Romans 10:9 below). If we confess Jesus, He will confess our name in heaven (see Revelation 3:5 below).

We don’t want to deny Christ like the disciple Peter did to avoid being arrested, of whom Jesus foretold would deny him, not once, but three times.

“Truly I tell you,” Jesus declared, “this very night before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”

–Matthew 26:34

“Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept.”

– Mark 14:72

If you haven’t noticed, the world – even the United States – is becoming an increasingly hostile environment toward Christians, as the respect and rights they once held are eroding away. Legislation is continually stripping Christianity away from environments where it was once welcomed. In short, Christianity has become unpopular and is out-of-favor.

Therefore, the day is coming when you will be forced to either take the politically correct route and concede your beliefs to the popular current, or take a stand for Christ no matter what the repercussions or consequences may be.

Jesus saw this coming and gave us these words of wisdom.

So the question is: Will you stand for Christ?
